Ultraprecision Polishing Asphere and Freeform Optics Using Robot based CCOS&MRF

Abstract

The utilization of 5 or 6 axis CNC machines, commonly known as "Box machines," in conjunction with sub-aperture polishing techniques such as Computer Controlled Optical Surfacing (CCOS), Magnetorheological Finishing (MRF), and Ion Beam Figuring (IBF), represents established methodologies for achieving sub-nanometer precision in the fabrication of aspherical and freeform optics. Despite their efficacy, these methods are characterized by a notable financial burden, particularly in the context of large-scale production of high-end optical components.

This presentation introduces a novel polishing methodology centered around robotic systems. Specifically, deterministic polishing technologies like CCOS and MRF are synergistically integrated with robotic platforms to realize a versatile and economically viable multi-axis polishing apparatus. The presentation delves into the advantages and disadvantages inherent in Robot CCOS&MRF systems, elucidating various compensation techniques designed to enhance the precision of the robotic polishing process.

Empirical evidence underscores the capability of robot-based CCOS & MRF systems to attain nanometer-level accuracy in the fabrication of mid-sized aspherical or freeform optics, all while operating within a cost-effective framework.

Biography

Xuejun Zhang received his Ph.D. degree from Changchun Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP) in 1997. He is now Director of CIOMP and academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Dr. Zhang has been engaged in optical system design, manufacturing, and testing for more than 30 years, and led his team in achieving a major breakthrough in the high-precision manufacturing technology of 4.03 meter SiC mirrors. He is also the team leader of the 30 Meter Telescope (TMT) Tertiary Mirror Manufacturing project. He was supported and rewarded by the National "Outstanding Youth" Fund, the Qian Xuesen Outstanding Contribution Award of the China Aerospace Foundation, and the Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Society for Space Science. Dr. Zhang is a Fellow of SPIE 、Chinese Optical Society、Chinese Society for Optical Engineering and a member of OSA. He has published 187 peer-reviewed papers.
